PROJECT: INNOVATION PARK

Progress update: At #iceideas we said we would establish an innovation park at in Parnell on the site above Carlaw Park and that creating innovation parks is a concept whose time has come after building out NZ’s innovation system for the last 10 years. There are continuing discussions across New Zealand about creating a series of ‘hubs’ or launch pads with a range of parties. Expect progress to be announced over the next year. The ICEHOUSE is hoping to finalise its long-term location in Auckland by Xmas 2011 while also partnering with regional organisations in other locations over the next year.

The ICEHOUSE is creating a significant innovation hub in New Zealand to help as a launching pad onto the global stage for Kiwi businesses.

Over the 10 years we have been based in Parnell, Auckland we have housed over 100 start-ups and we have seen the network grow and have seen the power of place and the role it can play in enabling communities, business and people to grow. A great location has been identified on the edge of the Auckland CBD. It is close to the City Universities, and its location is even more attractive given the planned changes in the City’s transport infrastructure which will place it on one of the ‘transport hubs’. This is definitely not set in stone.

Similar successful organisations internationally, normally after a period of 10 years move into their own purpose built location. The ICEHOUSE wants to create the same for entrepreneurship and innovation in New Zealand. It does not want the place for itself, it wants other like minded organisations to join and lets create something truly transformational.
